Check back frequently for updates on the various construction projects happening at Runnymede over the next few years.
Update from Principal Hochberg – Monday March 20th, 2017
Phase Three of window installation began over March Break.
The beginning of the new window installation project is mainly a preparation stage. In order to ensure safety around the project, wood hoarding has been built in the all the classrooms that face Colbeck St. (South Side of School Building).
We are working with the project manager and the construction company to ensure that there is proper air flow in the classrooms and the students are in a comfortable learning environment. However, with the weather being unpredictable at this time of year and the temperatures fluctuating, it is requested that students dress in layers. Further information will be provided over the following days.
Thank you for your understanding.
Timeline: Summer 2016 & Spring 2017
We reached our fundraising target and construction on the playground has started! A total of $235,000 was raised by the Runnymede community to fund the Centennial Playground Project.
The climbing structures and basketball courts (Phase One) will be finished by Fall 2016, the painted play areas (Phase Two) will be finished by Spring 2017.
Concrete Floor Slab Replacement (North/Senior/“New” wing)
Timeline: July 2016 – Winter 2017
The floor slabs of the north wing ground floor will be removed and replaced. This is necessary due to settling and structural cracking in the interior partitions due to settling of the floor slabs. Some work is required on the east side of the same wing (injection of foam materials).
Work will begin in July 2016 with the west side of the wing (complete floor demolition). The work on the west side, affecting Rooms 115 and 116, will not be completed until January/February 2017.
The remaining portion of the work, affecting Rooms 117, 118 and 119, will be completed by the beginning of September 2016 so that those classrooms will be ready for occupancy when school begins. However, the corridors to these three rooms will not be available; instead, doors will be opened in those classrooms to allow for access from the exterior (i.e., the rooms will operate like portables, but inside the school). Students will be required to access these classrooms by entering from the outside doors on the east side of the building (Exit #8).
Three other classrooms should be complete by the New Year 2017.
The end product will be two new classrooms (including new windows) and two new washrooms.
Restoration of Masonry and Windows (East-West/”Original” wing)
Timeline: Summer/Fall 2016 and Summer 2017
Restoration of masonry and windows (“cluster columns”) is required due to corrosion of the steel columns between the windows. The windows will be replaced. This is a major undertaking and scaffolding will remain in place until mid-September 2016. There will be fencing around the building where windows are being replaced until the jobsite is safe. Anticipated completion is the end of October 2016.
This project will be completed in two phases: Phase 1 (north wall of the east-west wing) in the summer/fall of 2016, and Phase 2 (south side, along the Colbeck/kindergarten yard) in summer 2017. The phasing is necessary to allow for the Centennial Playground project to continue as planned.
Some Notes Regarding the Construction Projects
- Need for use of the turf field will be taken into consideration, and no heavy equipment will be located on the turf field
- Efforts will be made to keep children safe during construction (e.g., bringing materials in early each day to avoid crossing the path of children during the school day; following proper requirements for testing and handling of building materials)
- A representative from the full-year on-site child care centre (RAC) will be present at all meetings to address parent concerns.
- If you have any questions about construction projects at the school please speak to Principal Hochberg.
