Year-end Gifts for Teachers…think local, shop local!

If a parent from your child’s class is collecting for a group gift, please consider supporting our local businesses.  Or…if you plan to purchase your own gift, please also consider buying local.  Community businesses are what make Bloor West Village so charming!  We are fortunate to have great shops to walk to.  These businesses are first to step up and help out Runnymede when we ask for donations/contributions for various events. We can reciprocate wherever possible and help keep these businesses thriving!  If you go in to make a purchase for a teacher, please let them know you are from Runnymede PS!

Here’s the list of vendors:
Binz
Bloom
Book City
JC Salon (pedicures/manicures for teachers)
Fat bastard
Good Fork
Max’s market (gift certificate etc)
Marlboroughs
Mad Mexican
Chocolate Delight
Peg Rolls (on Jane St.)
Shakeys

This is just a small list; if you think of another vendor/business, please let me know!

On another note, we have all recently had the pleasure of attending school concerts, so let’s not forget…our music teachers, Drama teachers, Gym teachers and others who work hard to ensure the students receive a great curriculum.  It might be nice to recognize them also; often these rotary teachers can get overlooked.  We also have a hard-working team in the front office, Library, Caretakers etc.  A few words of thanks go a long way to show appreciation.

Thank you for your consideration.

A Message from Dale Cadeau, Council Chair

image1.JPGAs the school year comes to an end, so will my third and final year as Chair at Runnymede PS.

It has been an honour getting to know parents, students, teachers & administration.  Knowing you are making a difference, in any small way, to the betterment of our children’s’ educational journey is truly humbling.  If you are new to the school, or wondering about how to make a difference, just jump right in as I did!  You won’t regret it!  Our Council thrives on the unique harmonies of new and seasoned parents!

I recently attended the Senior Concert, which was an incredible testament to the amazing music program at Runnymede.  As the Grade 8 Orchestra majestically performed ‘Pines of Rome’ as the finale, I was moved to tears by realizing they had successfully reached the end of their road at Runnymede.  A parallel of sorts, you could say!

Thank you, parents, for allowing me to be a part of this great Council, which will continue to thrive under new leadership next school year.  Thank you to Principal Hochberg for his incredible leadership and collaboration with Parent Council.  Thanks also to our VP’s, Susan & Anna for all of their support with Council initiatives.  Thank you to Greg, my Co-chair and all of the Committee Chairs for their invaluable contributions this year. We have all learned a lot and I am excited for the changes being implemented next year!  Bravo to all of us, for all that we do for our children, as a parent body and as a community.

Have a safe & happy summer!
Dale

Kindergarten Spring Gallery Walk and Grade 3 Photography Exhibit

My Invitation (2)
The Kindergarten Spring Gallery Walk and Grade 3 Photo Exhibit and Silent Auction at Maison Fou Brasserie was a huge success!  Thank you to the many Runnymede families that came by to take a look.

FDK and Impressionism

The inspiration for the art work was Claude Monet.  Young artists learned about “impressionism” as well as Claude Monet.  Students worked with oil pastels to create a watercolour resist, pulling out clouds with tissue and using acrylic paint to create the sense of flowers blowing the in the wind to create an “impressionist”  style painting

Grade 3 Photography

Gr. 3 students experimented with artistic composition in photography. Students looked for contrast and interesting composition within the frame. They experimented with wide and medium angles, close ups, as well as texture and pattern. Each class was given a different subject to explore– (i.e. lines, circles, squares/rectangles etc).

Thank you for celebrating spring with Runnymede’s young artists and their families!

Social Media Talk Recap

On Tues April 18th, Runnymede PS hosted Jumma Inniss, of The Message Movement, for an informative talk on Social Media & our Youth.  The Grade 6 students sat in on a talk with Juma from 2-3, then parents were invited back the same evening to hear a similar message which was more geared to parents.  This presentation was funded by a PRO Grant from the Ministry of Education.

IMG_4629At the afternoon presentation with the Grade 6 students, Juma cautioned students to think before posting because nothing ever disappears from Social Media even if the user deletes it.  Many students were under the impression that images do disappear once deleted.  He used a great analogy about driving, and how we have rules for the road to keep us safe, yet we don’t quite have the same levels of safety for keeping kids safe while on the internet.  He emphasized ‘We can be one bad decision away from veering off a safe path’.

During the evening talk, Juma touched on many negative & positive aspects of social media and offered some interesting Canadian stats.  He also explained how screen time can interrupt sleep patterns.  A key message from the talk was ‘CURE’ which is a behavioural tool we as parents can use in our approach with our kids to help engage them and better understand how they are navigating social media:

– Curiosity
– Understanding
– Respect
– Empathy

If we approach conversations with our kids leveraging these elements, this creates fertile ground for feedback from kids.

A great discussion arose between parents about the importance of engaging in conversation about devices and how we can collectively reinforce a consistent message to kids about when/how much device time is acceptable.  ‘Let’s put the brakes on it collectively!’ one parent commented.   Principal Hochberg explained the school’s policy in regards to devices, and a Runnymede mum who is also a high school teacher explained what issues they encounter with devices during school hours.  It was interesting to note that most students had Snapchat and/or Instagram accounts and hardly any had Facebook whereas when parents were asked, it was the reverse; many had Facebook and far less had Instagram/Snapchat.

Here is a thank you message from Juma:

Thank you again for inviting me to share with your community! I really enjoyed working with your students. I am so glad to have shared with your parents and happy I could help catalyze and provide a spark to further the conversation amongst yourselves collectively, and collaboratively.

Further to our discussion, please find a private link to our website below where parents can find additional resources on the social media topics they were curious about in addition to a copy of the presentation for standalone readability. Please feel free to share the contents of this article with the student who was curious about US citizens unable to block mobile communications from President Trump.
