FDK Arts Enrichment at Runnymede PS

Art in Action visited JK/SK classrooms where students were inspired by legendary Canadian artist Ted Harrison who made his home in the Yukon.

His love of the Canadian North is reflected in his iconic style of horizontal sections made up of brilliant colours.

Students also learned about the meaning, symbolism, and use of Inukshuks and worked with a wide variety of chaltek pastels, acrylic paint and collage materials to create their own great works of art in the style of Ted Harrison.

We are so fortunate to have The Arts Enrichment Program in our class this afternoon which is funded by the generous donations of Runnymede parents. MERCI BEAUCOUP! 😀 nous sommes des vrais artistes!! 🎨

~ Mme Jardine & Mme McBride

The FDK Arts Enrichment program is funded by Parent Council through your generous direct donations and organized primarily by the Arts Committee parent volunteers.

Runnymede Success at the FIRST LEGO League Competition

The 2016-17 Runnymede Robotics team had an exciting competition at the TDSB’s FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Tournament in late December. The theme for 2016/17 was “Animal Allies”, and the teams chose to study species that live in High Park: the Coywolf and the Bee. Students wanted to research animals in our own ‘backyard’.

fll7With finished Bee and Coywolf projects in hand, both teams proudly presented their Executive Robot Summary describing their strategies for missions, their robot design and their unique programming.

They also completed a core value challenge and discussed where they used their core values (Coopertition® and Gracious Professionalism®) this year. The coaches and mentors were proud to see the teams work together so seamlessly to finish some difficult core value games while respecting every individual, working as a team, and having fun.

fll3The Cyberbolts got callbacks for all of 3 of their presentations, and the Positive Vibes got 2 callbacks! During lunch, both teams worked hard to fine tune programs and rebuild attachments to be ready for the robot matches. They barely sat down to eat lunch!

At the end of the long day, we were proud to see our teams do so well. The Positive Vibes won “Most Inspirational Team” and the Cyberbolts won “Best Programming.”

The Cyberbolts placed 2nd out of 28 teams, and go on to the Provincial Championships!

Check out some of the incredible research our Runnymede teams have done by visiting their FLL website.

Runnymede’s FLL teams are possible because of parent volunteers working with sponsor teachers using funds allocated by Parent Council.

This amazing enrichment opportunity for Runnymede students happens because of your fundraising donations and parent volunteer hours – thank you!

Welcome (Back) To Runnymede!

WELCOME BACK, FROM RUNNYMEDE PARENT COUNCIL!

On behalf of Runnymede Parent Council, we would like to extend our warmest welcome to all new families, and to those of you returning to Runnymede. Week one of school will be hectic as our children settle into new classrooms with their new teachers, and we are here to help now and throughout the school year.  Look for Parent Council members at the Welcome Tent and in the school yard on the first day, we’ll be in our bright orange Runnymede t-shirts, ready to help you find your way.

We have a new Principal!  A warm welcome to Rob Hochberg, who returns to Runnymede as Principal after having spent the last few years as Principal at Twentieth Street Jr. School.  Rob was our VP several years ago, so his name and face may be familiar to some.  Council looks forward to continuing a strong partnership with Rob and his team on our many initiatives.

2016 has been a big year for the Runnymede! We held our big Centennial Fun Fair in the Spring, and completed our Centennial Playground Project fundraising campaign.  Thanks to your generous donations, construction is already under way. The climbing structures and basketball courts (Phase One) will be finished by Fall 2016, the painted play areas (Phase Two) will be finished by Spring 2017.

We cannot run a great Parent Council without great parents!  We have a number of Parent Rep and Council positions vacant, as current members have reached the end of their term.  Please take a look at some of the roles, and let us know how you can help with Parent Council this year.
